Topps 1983, #245: Steve Sax. A Happy Birthday to the former Dodger Rookie of the Year! Sax played parts of 14 seasons with LA, Yankees, White Sox and Oakland. The five-time All Star was twice a world champion in Los Angeles (’81 & ’88) and was known for his speed (444 career stolen bases) and sometime erratic throwing arm. Pedro Guerrero, a former teammate of Sax from their Dodger days who also had his shares of issues in the field once said that whenever he was in the field “I hope they don’t hit it to me but I also hope they don’t hit it to Sax.” By 1989, the “Steve Sax Syndrome” was long gone as “Saxy” led the AL in both fielding percentage and double plays.
Last year I was lucky enough to attend Dodger Fantasy Camp in Arizona. Sax was a coach and was a lot of fun to hang out with. But watching my wife around Sax was classic as she had a major crush on him back in the day!
